Arcade Releases

Awesomenauts and Fable Heroes released today. The former is like a side scrolling, faster version of League of Legends (or DotA or Heroes of Newerth for those not sure of the League of Legends title) with six heroes currently available to choose from. The latter is similar to Castle Crashers, but with a Fable skin. Both are well done, in my opinion.

You can get both of these titles on Xbox Live for 800 MSP. Awesomenauts is also free for PSN+ users who may be interested.

If Fable Heroes sounds familiar to you as a title, this is one of XBL’s Arcade Next titles with a total of 400 gamerscore to be had! Check out their demos and see if these games interest you!

Hybrid Beta

Hybrid by 5THCELL just recently sent me a key to try out their beta. Redeeming the key and letting my Xbox download the 1.30gig demo, I figured I’d give it a shot.

In Hybrid, you begin by choosing either the Variants (red team, basically) versus the Paladins (blue team). From there, you are equipped with various weapons and skills to take out the other squad during battles. As you rank up, new abilities are opened up to you, and your killing potential grows. Fortunately, Hybrid has plenty of maps and a lot of game modes, so the grind of ranking up your levels should not become too repetitive.

There are a couple of downfalls to Hybrid, however. The first is the Drone ability. As your kill streak grows, you unlock different robots that help you kill your enemies. While this is a cool idea on paper, it is annoying to have your enemy kill a noob teammate of yours a couple times, then unlock that scary wicked drone that hones in on you and kills you in one hit.

The actual map and game mode choosing is somewhat difficult to figure out as well. Unlike Gears of War or Halo, you do not have a definitive squad leader that chooses the starting map and etc for you. Instead, everyone in your squad has to make the decision of where you are beginning, click it individually, and then hit the confirmation button. All the extra steps could easily be reduced and make the game feel much more streamlined.

– I read somewhere that the squad can actually choose anywhere on the map and just go for it and still be in the same game, but… considering that most games do not work like that and there is no tutorial detailing this freedom, it only complicates the start up process more. Apparently, the whole point of allowing this zone self-choosing is to give you your own individual bonuses depending on where you go on the map for the games  –

Lastly, the online only feature of Hybrid is probably the biggest drawback. While the concept of fighting in real time over different territories in the game is neat, it’s frustrating when trying to play to be informed that the Hybrid servers are down. You can’t even get past the title screen during downtime. I’m hoping that this is a beta only issue and that the actual release of the game will have stable servers, but for now, I am wary of spending any money on the purchase of this title.

Here’s the website if you want to read more the actual game and follow their forums: http://www.whatishybrid.com/

If anything, I highly recommend giving the beta a try. The game is interesting enough in concept, and it does run SUPER smooth.

Google “Zerg Rush”

Entering “Do a barrel roll” and other such key words can have an interesting effect on your Google search page. Now, Google has released a new Easter Egg where, when you type “Zerg Rush” into Google’s search, you are launched into a minigame where you have to defend your page from a zerg rush!

For those of you are unfamiliar with the term, the zerg are a playable race in the game Starcraft. In the game, a so called “zerg rush” is an early-game strategy where you utilize a lot of cheap units that swarm your opponents. The APM that you see is “Actions Per Minute,” a very popular measurement in professional gaming. The best pro gamers for StarCraft have about 250-300 Actions Per Minute.

Most likely, this is just a nod towards Blizzard and the StarCraft 1 and 2 series. I’m pleased being a big StarCraft fan myself… though I like my Protoss.

Diablo 3 Beta

It’s a little under a month until Diablo 3 officially releases, and the excitement is building! I’ve had the honor of being able to access the beta since around November 2011, and it has been a journey seeing how Blizzard has changed around their plan of action throughout the beta experience.

Here’s a couple of interesting little tidbits about the beta and the changes Blizzard has implemented so far:

1. Blizzard originally had the idea of obelisks, which were located throughout towns and dungeon beginnings. These obelisks allowed you to alter what skills you have equipped, and without them, you were stuck with the “set” of skills you had equipped earlier. Thankfully, this was removed, so you can change things up on the fly and can equip skills you earn on level ups. It’s a relief not needing to go running back to town when you realize you’re not fond of the new skill you decided to give a try.

2. Crafting. Originally, you could break down any item (be it common, uncommon, or otherwise) and use the materials to form your own gear. They’ve changed it now so you can only gain crafting resources from “blue” items are above, and anything below ends up being something you just sell. I’m neutral on the change – I think it’ll be nice in that it’ll limit all the common crafting equipment that do nothing in the long run but fill up your storage, but I did like hoarding items going I MIGHT NEED TO USE THIS FOR CRAFTINGZ.

3. Diablo 3 is an incredibly smooth game to play now. When I originally started up the beta in November, it was pretty choppy, and special effects often lagged down my game and left me with a pretty terrible framerate. Now, it’s a beauty to play, and I love how great the game runs even when I am on my little netbook.

… I’ll post more in the future about the various classes, their unique skills, and what kind of pros and cons they may have, but for now, I’ll leave the post with simply this information and say HIP HIP HOORAY, DIABLO 3 WILL BE OUT SOOOOOOOOON!

Many, many hours of my life will be lost to it.

Skyrim DLC: Bethesda Reassures Fans

Responding to a fan resigned to there being no Skyrim DLC in the wake of New Vegas DLC delays, the developer wrote on Twitter: “Rest assured, it’s coming.”

Bethesda’s Pete Hines previously teased: “Some things coming down the road in April for all you Rage and Skyrim fans. April is gonna have some cool news and surprises. Stay tuned.”

Nothing is known about the upcoming DLC, other than it could have something to do with a trademark for ‘Dawnguard’ and expand to the as yet unused parts of the game map that hint at Morrowind and Cyrodiil.

Fingers crossed that we will be seeing more DLC content for Skyrim very soon!
